Overnight, Subaru revealed the special edition BRZ tS and WRX STi Type RA for the American market.
Let’s start with the BRZ tS. Unfortunately, it doesn’t receive any upgrades under the bonnet and thus remains its initial 152kW and 212Nm 2.0L 4 cylinder boxer engine. However, the tS receives new Sachs springs &a dampers all around – these are fitted with 18-inch lightweight STI wheels with 215/49 Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires and Breton performance brakes.
Cosmetic wise, the BRZ tS receives a manually adjustable carbon fibre spoiler, a red accent on the grille and rear diffuser, STI fog light covers and black mirrors and antenna. Finally, the interior comes with red seat belts, new leather and suede trim pieces all complemented by red stitching.
The RA in WRX STi Type RA stands for ‘Record Attempt’, and that’s what Subaru intends to do with the racing version, the Type RA NBR Special – set a 4-door Nurburgring record. Under the bonnet of the road going car now has 231kW (up 4kW from the regular model) thanks to a cold air intake and new high flow exhaust. One of the focuses of the new Type RA is lightness – it loses the spare tire, and replaces the roof and rear spoiler with lightweight carbon fibre ones. It also receives 19-inch forged BBS alloy wheels running in 245/35 Yokohama Advan Sports tires. In addition, the Type RA gets Bilstein performance dampers, six-piston front and two-piston rear Brembo brakes and a retuned ESC system. Finally, the Type RA receives a suede/Alcantara steering wheel, Recaro front bucket seats and red trim both outside and inside the car.
Sadly, both the BRZ tS and WRX STi Type RA are limited to 500 units for the US only, which is a shame as I’m sure there would be many Australian buyers interested in both cars – they will go on sale in ‘Murica in Q1 2018. What do you guys think of these cars? Let me know down below!
