Today, after months of teasing, BMW officially unveiled the all new, F90 generation M5.

Under the bonnet, the new M5 is powered by a 4.4L twin turbo V8 producing 441kW of power and 750Nm of torque. These figures propel the M5 to 100km/h in just 3.4 seconds, to 200km/h in 11.1 seconds up to a limited top speed of 250km/h – however, if unrestricted, BMW say the M5 could hit 305km/h.

As confirmed earlier this year, the F90 is the first ever M5 to be all wheel drive. The M xDrjve system it uses it rear biased, and can be set to be RWD only on the infotainment system. The rear axle also scores an Active M Differential that can distribute torque and power between the rear wheels. Transmission wise, the F90 M5 uses an 8-speed M Steptronic torque converter automatic with paddle shifters mounted to the steering wheel – the transmission also has an option of three different driving modes.

Suspension up front is just a double wishbone system, while the rear gets a 5 link setup specially tuned for the M5 – it also features an aluminium strut at the rear to improve handling response. From standard, the M5 receives Orbit Grey 19-inch 5-double-spoke alloys, with 275/40 front and 285/40 rear tyres – however, the F90 M5 can be optioned with 20-inch 7-double-spoke allows in black/polished black, with 275/35 front and 285/35 rear tyres. Stopping the M5 are blue M compound 6-piston front and single piston rear brakes – 23kg lighter M carbon ceramics are available as options.

Interior wise, the M5 reveieves the same cockpit and dash design as the regular 5 Series range. The infotainment system controls the xDrive system’s power distribution and other M unique features. Passengers are treated to Merino leather upholstery with M sports seats and M branding all around.

BMW have also announced a ‘First Edition’ for the new M5. Limited to just 400, it gets a special new Frozen Dark Red Metallic with black Shadow Line trim (the trim like the grille etc are all glossy black). The First Edition gets the larger 20-inch alloys finished in black as standard. Further, the cabin of the FE is lined with piano Black accents, and gets Smoke White leather upholstery with red stitching.
