This week, reports have been swirling around the internet of the possibility of a Volvo coupe SUV model dubbed the XC50 arriving in the future.
This rumor has come up thanks to two things. Firstly, Volvo recently filed a trademark for the XC50 nameplate, hinting at an SUV model that will slot between the XC40 and XC60. However, trademarks are often filed merely out of precaution, so this XC50 name could easily be a dud.
The other reason for this is thanks to AutoExpress. When they spoke with Lex Kerssemakers, the senior VP of Volvo in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, he explained: “We cover 98 per cent of the segments, so it’s more likely we’ll go further into the depths than expand.” He was then asked about the possibility of a coupe SUV, and said “Potentially, but not in the short term”. Considering Volvo is due to complete its base lineup in mid 2019, a 2020 launch date for the XC50 would be reasonable.
