Mazda has released pricing and specification details for the facelifted 2018 6 sedan.

Headlining the changes is a new engine option: a 2.5-litre, turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine taken from the CX-9 large SUV. It produces 170kW of power and a meaty 420Nm of torque delivered at 2000rpm. The turbo petrol engine uses a special Dynamic Pressure Turbo system, and unlike many other engines of its size and induction type it can run on 91 RON regular unleaded fuel.

Other engine changes include a 11kW/30Nm upgrade to the 2.2-litre twin-turbo diesel engine boosting outputs to 140kW/450Nm, the addition of cylinder deactivation to the 2.5-litre, 140kW/252Nm naturally aspirated petrol engine.

Safety changes consist of a wider range of gear that includes blind-spot monitoring, driver attention alert, high-beam assist, traffic sign recognition, lane-departure warning, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, a rising pedestrian-saving bonnet, rear cross-traffic alert and an autonomous emergency braking (AEB) system that works up to 160km/h.

Mechanically, the 6’s chassis has been updated to increase rigidity while the suspension is smoother and more composed over bumps. There’s also extra body and chassis bracing and thicker materials in the rear wheel well, which all help to improve noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) levels.

From the outside, the grille has been enlarged and it sits deeper within the bodywork with an updated mesh design. There’s a new design for the bootlid, new 17-inch and 19-inch wheels and repositioned exhaust pipes.

Inside, all variants get an updated head-up display and a larger 8.0-inch MZD Connect infotainment display with a rotary dial controller. The top-spec Atenza now gets front-seat ventilation, a 360-degree surround-view camera, 7.0-inch TFT digital instruments, Walnut Brown Nappa leather upholstery, Sen wood accents and suede door trim.
