Yesterday, Ford launched the Ford Performance sub-brand in Australia – complemented by the confirmation that the Mustang will race in the 2019 Supercars championship season.

One of the first Ford Performance models to arrive in Australia is the Ranger Raptor, the twin turbo off-road ute, accompanied by the 2018 Mustang, Focus ST and Focus RS. All of those models will be on sale (badged as Ford Performance vehicles) by the end of the year. Ford have also finally confirmed that the 2019 Fiesta ST will be coming to Australia under the Ford Performance banner in the second quarter of 2019. Sadly, only the ST model is coming – the regular Fiesta will remain a Europe-only affair.

In the words of Ford Australia CEO Graeme Whickman, “Ford Performance is about technology, innovation and product performance and to showcase our confidence in our performance range, we are bringing Mustang and the Ranger Raptor to the Supercars series in 2019.”

You heard that last bit right – The Mustang will compete in the 2019 Supercars championship. Two teams, DJR Team Penske and Tickford Racing, will run the car from 2019, and will assist Ford Performance in getting it homologated. It will use a V8 engine despite the option to use a turbo V6 detailed in the sport’s rules. Ford also announced that the Ranger Raptor will be used as a Supercars recovery vehicle.

What are your thoughts on the new Ford Performance brand and the Mustang’s racing future? I’m pretty excited – how about you? Let me know below.
